Mustarindan pelto on toiminut kasvimaana vuosikymmeniä sitten ja sinne on ajettu talvisin mutaa tontin kulmalta. Multakerroksen paksuus on pääosin hyvä. Hiekkaisimpiin penkkeihin istutimme maanparannuskasveja. Lisää multaa penkkeihin saimme myös käytäviltä. Kompostia lisättiin ravinnepitoisesta maasta pitäville kasveille kaivamisvaiheessa, ja välillä sen unohduttua myös kylvövakoon. Kaivaessa löytyi hiilistä ja lasinsiruista päätellen nuotiopaikka sekä vanha mansikkamaa ja kasvihuoneen pohja. Hiilet eivät maadu, joten koitimme saada ne kerättyä pois maasta ja levitimme tuhkan tasaisemmin penkkeihin pH:n tasapainottamiseksi.

The field next to Mustarinda has been a vegetable garden some decades ago, and more dirt has been brought there from another parts of the yard. The layer of soil in the field is quite good. In more sandy parts we planted green manure plants. We added compost to the beds when digging – and if forgot, we added some when we made the rows for the seeds. We also used the black dirt layer from the paths in the garden beds. We tried to take away the coal that we found from old fireplaces, and spread the rest of the ash to the beds for balancing the pH.

Muhevalta näyttää maa, varmasti kaikki on lähtenyt hyvin kasvuun. Tuosta vanhan nuotiopaikan hiilestä ajattelin mainita, että se olisi sinänsä kannattanut jättääkkin sinne maaperään; hiilellä on erittäin hyvä vaikutus kasvien kasvuun ja maaperän viljavuuteen yleensäkin. Tuo on sellainen juttu että ilmeisen moni murskaa ihan jotain grillihiiliä muruiksi ja levittää puutarhaan. Kun hiiltä levitetään pelloille, on muutos maaperän laatuun valtava. Hiili puhdistaa, varastoi ravinteita, antaa erittäin hyvän kodin maaperän hyödyllisille mikrobeille jne..

Soil at your garden looks very good, for sure everything has started to grow already very well.
I thought to mention about carbon in the soil, that you probably should have left the carbon that you found into the soil; It has very good effect to the growth of plants and productivity of land in general.
I suggest anyone to research thing called Terra Preta or Biochar.
This is such a thing that many people even buy commercial carbon meant for barbeque (it has to be 100% carbon, not briquettes!), crush it and spread to their garden´s soil. When carbon is spread to the fields, the effect to the quality of soil is massive. Carbon purifies (when needed), stores nutrients and gives very good home for beneficial microbes in the soil etc..
